Capstone Project - Macbeth

Situation

As part of our capstone project, my wife and I were asked by our advisor and dean of graduate studies to collaborate on the project to see how well we worked together. We decided to create a blended/hybrid learning environment for her senior-level English class on Macbeth, using a mix of eLearning to present new information to the students, classroom discussion on the concepts and focused areas, and a weekly quiz to assess their understanding.

Task

While Kristen acted as SME, I did the design and development. Together, we worked on the layout and overall vision of the project, what needed to be included in the eLearning, what would be left for the in-class coverage, and how best to address the weekly quiz. She provided the links and written portions while I would create the project and have her work side-by-side with me to learn as well.

Action

It was decided to use Rise 360 for the eLearning portion as Kris would be using Chromebooks and laptops and Rise could handle both devices in one offering. Images, animations, video, and audio were pulled from various sources, and formative assessments were created by Kris to provide in-line concept checks. The weekly quiz would be built in Storyline 360 as we wanted to provide a gaming environment to judge the success of this delivery over the traditional quizzes which would require the use of variables and data tracking.

Result

The result was not only a resounding success with our advisor and dean, but Kris' English class as well. Not only that, it was so successful and unique that her colleagues asked if they could use this in their classes as well. The overall success of the unique work that we did showed both a high-level of team work and collaboration, but the ability to blend two different  types of personalities into one cohesive delivery.
